Shyna, Roopesh, Veeramani, Kannan and Anoop in court

They were produced before Mahila Court Judge M.P. Subramaniam, who is in charge of the vacation court. Charges under Sections 124 (A) (Sedition) and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code along with Section 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were invoked against them. According to S. Balamurugan, the Tamil Nadu General Secretary of People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), who is one of the lawyers representing them, the Judicial Magistrate turned down the Coimbatore District Police’s plea for custody, stating that the police application lacked adequate details and remanded them to judicial custody till June 3. While being taken to the court, Roopesh told the media that they were actually picked up from Vindhya Nagar in Andhra Pradesh several days ago. He added that they were on hunger strike till Tuesday as police had denied them legal help. Roopesh also said they stopped the hunger strike only after they were promised of being produced before the court on Wednesday.
