Naxals bring ayurveda to Bastar tribals
Maoists have taken up the task of spreading awareness of traditional Indian medicine, ayurveda, among the tribals in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar region of Abujhmad where rebels run a parallel government. The Nelnar Area Committee of CPI(Maoist) operating in the Orchha region in south Bastar district of Narayanpur, which falls in Abujhmad area, has circulated brochures in tribal Gondi dialect detailing various herbal plants available in the area and their therapeutic values, among the local adivasis, the police quoted a local Naxal commander, who surrendered recently, as saying.
“The brochure, titled ‘Mawa Jungle, Mawa Dawai (my forest, my medicine)’, introduces different kinds of herbal plants and illustrates their therapeutic power to treat the particular diseases. The booklet has not only helped the tribals residing in remote and inaccessible villages having no access to medical facilities but also the local rebel cadres,” Nelnar Area Committee commander Navin, who gave up arms recently, revealed to the police. “We have seized some brochures and sent them to the experts to examine the authenticity of the claims made in the literature,” a senior district police officer told this newspaper on condition of anonymity. “Krantikari Jantan Sarkar (Maoists’ parallel government)” of Telnar Area functioning under Mad-North Bastar joint division of CPI(Maoist) has been mentioned as publisher of the booklet.

The brochure gives tips on treating 56 types of diseases, including malaria, diarrhoea, small pox, bone fractures, healing of injuries, chest pain, tonsil, snake bites and asthma through herbal medicines. Maoists have been running parallel governments in the villages of Kutul, Toke, Maheneli, Kudnar, Padamkot, Usebeda, Kasturmeta, Nelangur and Farasbeda under Orchha region.
