Over 150 members of a splinter Maoists group were arrested today in Nepal after they vandalised vehicles and hurled patrol bombs while trying to enforce a strike to press for the release of their cadres arrested during previous protests, paralysing normal life. The CPN-Maoist faction led by Netra Bikram Chand enforced the strike. The protesters vandalised nine public buses and taxis in different parts of the capital for defying their call for the strike.
A truck driver was injured when Maoist cadres hurled a petrol bomb on moving vehicle in Rautahat district. There was very thin movement of public and private transport services. Schools and colleges were closed due to the strike. However, markets remained open in most of the places in the capital despite the strike. The police arrested 62 protesters from Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur, according to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Circle. Nearly 90 agitators were arrested from Sarlahi, Kaski, Kalikot, Sunsari, Banke and Chitawan districts as they were trying to enforce the shutdown. A large number of security personnel have been deployed on the streets of the capital to prevent any untoward incident.

Nepal police arrest scores of Maoist splinter group members over nationwide strike
Police in Nepal arrested nearly a hundred members of a Maoist splinter group across the country on Thursday for vandalising vehicles while trying to enforce a nationwide strike. The protesters called on factories, schools and public transport to shut down across the Himalayan nation as they demanded the release of fellow cadres from the hardline faction, the Communist Party of Nepal Maoist. The party workers were arrested earlier for allegedly vandalising property in different parts of the country. Police spokesman Madhav Joshi said demonstrators had vandalised five vehicles in the latest strike but said no injuries had been reported. “We have taken 92 people into custody for trying to block roads and vandalise vehicles,” Joshi said.

Maoist faction’s bandh throws life out of gear in Valley
KATHMANDU: Normal life in the Kathmandu Valley has been thrown out of gear due to a nationwide bandh imposed by the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN Maoist on Thursday. Educational institutions, markets and shops pulled down their shutters from early morning, while public and private vehicles stayed off the roads. Police said that they have arrested 28 bandh enforcers from Kathmandu, 14 from Lalitpur and three from Bhaktapur.
