Summary: Labour laws are a reflection of the balance of class power between capital and labour. The gains that were made by labour movements before liberalization are getting whittled away in a world where capital has become all-powerful. The article explores this change by examining provisions of different labour laws and how they have been tilting against labour. By informalizing labour and by passing the cost of labour to the State, capital is succeeding in creating a system of international division of labour which will transform India into a global sweatshop. Modi Sarkar’s ascent is quickening this transformation. -
