Police sound alert in Bihar
Patna: Following some recent successful operations against Red rebels, security forces are taking precautionary measures to thwart any damage attempted by the Maoists. All the Red-hit districts have been put on high alert. A police sub-inspector of 2009 batch, Bhavesh Kumar, was shot dead allegedly by Maoists in Munger district on January 30 morning. He was posted at the Dharahara police station in the district and had gone for an anti-Red operation.
“Of late, we have got some major successes in anti-Naxalite operations, including the encounter death of Chirag Da, one of the top leaders of the outfit, in Jamui, five Red casualties in Aurangabad encounter, other arrests and busting of camps. But the death of the SI came as an eye-opener for us. We are conducting capsule courses (training of two-three days) on precautionary measures to be taken by the security personnel while going for anti-Maoist and other operations,” said IG, operations and STF, Sushil M Khopde. He added the Red rebels may strike back to take revenge. All the district SPs and the commanders have been asked to send their patrols only on foot, as per the standard operating procedure for Red-hit areas, and follow other precautionary measures on operation. In 2013, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) decided to stop the use of mine-protected vehicles (MPV) in left-wing extremism areas.
Sources said these vehicles were not ideal for jungle patrols. The improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are buried as deep as 20 feet inside the ground, making it difficult to trace them. When IEDs are blown off, jawans are killed inside the MPVs. At times, these vehicles are blown to pieces. Sunil Kumar, IG (HQ) said, “We are now focusing on basic precautionary measures in which the policemen get training during their service. They are supposed to wear bulletproof vest and helmet when on field.”
During the 2015 assembly election, policemen were given training on usage of security equipment. Such training courses are being revisited, as senior officials feel that the policemen on field are not taking the guidelines seriously enough, causing injuries. Bihar Police use bulletproof vest of NJJ III A category, which provide protection against most handgun threats as well as the threats of long-range arms.
