Resistance continues against the Tia Maria project of Southern Copper, the Peruvian subsidiary of the multinational monopoly Grupo Mexico owned by German Larrea already known for his contamination of the water supply in Sonora. Strike ongoing for more then 50 days with a force of 2000 police and 1000 Army personnel authorized to use fire arms by the Interior Ministry. At least four people have been killed and hundreds injured. Most recently the Peruvian state has announced a 60 day period of martial law in Arequipa during which constitutional rights will be suspended.
