Ensure Bail to Prof with Maoist Links, KK Urges Rajnath
HYDERABAD: Rajya Sabha member and TRS leader K Keshava Rao has
requested the Central government to intervene and ensure that bail is
granted to Prof G N Saibaba, who was arrested by the Maharashtra police
in 2014 for his alleged links with Maoists. In a letter written to Union
Home Minister Rajnath Singh recently, the MP sought his intervention to
ensure that Saibaba was granted bail. Considering the poor health
condition of Saibaba, who suffers from 90 per cent disability, the
government should respond on humanitarian grounds and provide him better
medical facilities, Keshava Rao said.
“Our intervention is more on the grounds of his physical disability
and noble academic profession,” he stressed and described the case of
Saibaba as a classic example of humiliation, indignity and violence that
most people with disabilities are subjected to when they are arrested,
incarcerated, institutionalised or otherwise engaged with law
enforcement agencies. Referring to the Persons with Disabilities Act,
1995, Keshava Rao urged the government to provide Saibaba with proper
medical treatment at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS).
Section 46 of the Act mandates proper facilities to persons with
disabilities, he pointed out. “India is also a party to the UN
convention on Rights of persons with Disability (UNCRPD) which speaks
eloquently about the special treatment and justice to be meted out to
such persons,’’ he reminded. Recently, the TRS MP had also given a
notice for discussion on Saibaba in the Rajya Sabha during the Zero
Hour. However, it could not be taken up for discussion for some reason.
To highlight the issue, Keshava Rao had decided to personally write a
letter to the Union Home Minister.
