Brasil - Investigation of violations of rights against peasants in Tiago Campin dos Santos - info and solidarity

On December 6, 2025, a Solidarity and Investigation Commission visited the rural area of Tiago Campin dos Santos to show solidarity with the peasant families and to collect reports on the actions of the forces of repression. Several organizations, among them ABRAPO, CEBRASPO or CPT also accompanied the mission.

The 80 peasants present recounted the moments of terror committed by the Rondônia Military Police on November 12, 2025, and in the following weeks. The most notable were abuse of authority, verbal abuse, and humiliation imposed on children, women, and men. Houses, health clinics, schools, and businesses were broken into, theft of personal items like cell phones, computers, flash drives.

The military operation also ended up in the murder of one peasant, and according to family members and neighbors, Elias, a long-time resident of the Tiago Campin dos Santos area, had his house surrounded by about 50 police officers before dawn. He and his wife were shot with rifles while they were in their bedroom.

Families denounce the collusion of state agencies, which allegedly act to prevent crimes committed by the military police.

The detailed accounts collected are being organized into reports that will be forwarded by the group of organizations and entities present and will be widely disseminated to national and international agencies and bodies.

Peasants seize two latifundia

On the night of November 30, dozens of peasants from the Leonel Brizola I and Leonel Brizola II camps occupied the large estates known as “Fazenda Pedra Negra” and “Fazenda Maruim Amada,” located in Caxeta. On November 25, the old Brazilian State had communicated an eviction order to the peasants, which led to the takeover of the land days later, A Nova Democracia (AND) reports.

The peasants explain to a local newspaper that the “Fazhenda Maruim Amada” was supposed to be allocated by the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Refrom (INCRA), but “as usual, nothing happened until the families mobilized in a combative manner.”

AND reports, “The peasants declared that they will not give up the land until its allocated to their families and until they are duly registered with INCRA, given the slowness of the agency. The Rio de Janeiro State Military Police (PMERJ) was called in on the morning of December 1, and in the early hours of December 2, the peasants were expelled, quickly reoccupying the land on the morning of the same day.”

In videos posted on social media, the peasants affirm that come rain or shine, they will fight for quality of life and dignity for the people, and that they are occupying and protesting to demand a response from the old State, ending with the slogan: We want land!
