Trade Unions Announce All India General Strike on February 12, 2026

The Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions (CTUs) and Sectoral Federations/Associations has announced an All India General Strike on February 12, 2026, against the Modi government’s draconian Labour Codes and its all-round assault on workers’ rights, livelihoods, and people’s entitlements. The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the CTUs and sectoral organisations held on December 22, 2025, in hybrid mode.

Issuing a press statement on December 23, the CTUs declared that the strike date will be formally ratified at the National Workers’ Convention scheduled to be held on January 9, 2026, at HKS Surjeet Bhawan, New Delhi. A detailed plan of action for the nationwide strike will also be finalised at the convention.

The meeting expressed deep anguish over the relentless and brazen attacks unleashed by the Modi government inside and outside Parliament. The CTUs strongly condemned the passage of the so-called “Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act”, which opens the nuclear power sector to private and foreign profiteers while absolving suppliers of liability in case of accidents or disasters.  The CTUs also denounced the replacement of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act with the VB-GRAM G, calling it a direct attack on the rights-based framework of rural employment.  Allowing 100% FDI in the insurance sector, the placement of the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, and the proposed Draft Seed Bill and Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 were also sharply criticised.

The CTUs extended strong solidarity to all people’s movements resisting these anti-people policies and saluted the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) for its unconditional support to the General Strike. The National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) has also announced a sectoral national strike on the same day, February 12, with full strength. The SKM has further decided to observe Resistance Day on January 16, 2026, at village and block levels against the Seed Bill, Electricity (Amendment) Bill, VB-GRAMG Act, and other anti-people measures, with full participation of the trade unions.
