PRESS RELEASE
Date: 09.07.15
North-East Forum for International
Solidarity (NEFIS) condemns the brutal killing of a student
while protesting against the government in Manipur!
Hundreds of NEFIS activists gathered
and gheraoed Manipur Bhawan.
Today a large number of students from
different regions of North-East, led by NEFIS protested against
the high-handed crackdown of police on peaceful protesters in
Manipur. The police brutality on people was once again
demonstrated when on Wednesday, 8th of July, a student was killed
while demonstrating against the Government. The victim was a Class
11th student, who was fatally wounded when to scatter
the protesters, the tear gas shell fired from close range hit
him.
This incident is connected to other
past incidents where peoples’ right to dissent has been
gagged by the authorities and their democratic right to protest
against the government, violated. It should be noted that the
people who were protesting were innocent school students of
different educational institutions. It is shameful that police
could not tolerate even a peaceful protest by students
and shockingly tried to disperse the protesters using
reprehensible means.
A delegation of NEFIS also met the
Resident Commissioner of Manipur and submitted a Memorandum
addressed to the Chief Minister of Manipur.
The following demands were raised:
The following demands were raised:
1. There should be an immediate and
independent inquiry into the incident.
2. The Police personnel responsible
for the death of the student should be immediately suspended.
3. There should be an immediate stop
on any mode of repression on peaceful Democratic movements.
NEFIS will take the issue to National
level, if the demands are not immediately heard. We request
your esteemed daily/magazine to cover our news, so that a
democratic movement against police repression on people rights
to dissent gains a big momentum.
Thanking You,
