The International League of Peoples' Struggle Commission 1 and Commission 4 condemn in the strongest terms the recent US airstrike on a hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan that resulted in the deaths of 22 people including volunteer doctors and children patients. The hospital was being operated by the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) International. Its precise GPS coordinates have been known to the Afghan government and the US-led coalition, yet it was bombed for 30 minutes last October 3.
The bombing of the hospital violates International Humanitarian Law. Clearly it is a war crime for which the United States and the puppet Afghan government must be accountable for.
The official US storyline on the incident has been changing over the days, in an obvious attempt to obscure US accountability. From initially claiming that the hospital was collateral damage in the airstrike, the US and Afghan governments now claim that the Taliban were using the hospital garden as a base to launch attacks against Afghan forces. Top US military officials have called the bombing of the hospital a “mistake” but stopped short of pinpointing actual accountability.
US President Barack Obama himself has apologized to MSF, promising a transparent investigation of the facts and circumstances surrounding the deadly airstrike. MSF meanwhile has demanded an independent international probe into the incident.
The subsequent justifications for the attack all the more underscore the nature of the incident as a war crime perpetrated by the US. The investigation being promised by the US government and NATO will amount to nothing but a cover-up and justification of the attack.
The tragic results of the airstrike in Kunduz also would not deter the US from undertaking similar airstrikes in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports that the US has undertaken at least 83 confirmed drone strikes for the year 2015 up to the month of September, or prior to the attack on Kunduz. Casualties range from 500 to 700 people.
The Kunduz airstrike comes days after the US-backed Saudi airstrike in Yemen that killed 130 people. US drone strikes and civilian casualties have increased under the Obama administration.
ILPS Commission 1 and Commission 4 call on the peoples of the world to vigorously condemn US airstrikes and military intervention in Afghanistan and in other parts of the world. We call on the various members of the ILPS to hold protest actions and add their voices against the US bombing of the MSF hosptial. There can be no peace with the continuing imposition of the US imperialist agenda in Asia. We call on the people to intensify the struggle against US wars of aggression and military intervention!
