The fascist Turkish State continues its policies of repression, persecution, and attacks against political refugees who have been forced to leave the country, just as it does within its borders.
The Tayyip Erdoğan-AKP government, which continues its repression and attacks against revolutionaries, democrats, communists, and all opposition groups, and which maintains its power with the support of the MHP, is attempting to stay in power through increasingly severe repressive policies.
While, on one hand, policies aimed at encircling and eliminating the Kurdish national movement continue, on the other hand, the Turkish State continues its detention and arrest operations against opposition groups through the use of judicial and police forces. The Turkish State is also extending its repressive policies beyond its borders, pursuing political refugees living abroad through Interpol warrants and extradition requests.
Jülide Yazıcı, a writer and translator living as a political refugee in France, was detained on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Tirana Airport during a trip from France to Albania. She was detained during passport control on the grounds of an Interpol warrant and an extradition request from the Turkish State. Jülide Yazıcı was remanded in custody by the court on August 7, 2026.
Jülide Yazıcı has been living in France as a political refugee for over eight years due to a conviction against her in Turkey. Her detention and arrest in Albania is a continuation of the Turkish State’s policy of surveillance and repression against political exiles living abroad.
The Turkish State’s repression and persecution of exiles forced to leave their country for political reasons continue beyond its borders through Interpol warrants and extradition requests. The detention, arrest, and threat of extradition to Turkey of political refugees in third countries, constitute a serious violation of their rights to freedom, security, and life.
As the European Union of Migrant Workers (AGEB):
We call on the Albanian government to immediately release Jülide Yazıcı, who holds political refugee status in France, and to categorically reject any attempt to extradite her to the fascist Turkish State.
It is clear that if Jülide Yazıcı is extradited to Turkey, she will be arrested, her freedom will be restricted, and she will once again be subjected to repression and prosecution for political reasons. It is unacceptable for a person with political refugee status to be deprived of their freedom based on an extradition request from the country they were forced to flee.
For this reason, we call upon revolutionary and democratic institutions, human rights organizations, progressive forces, and the entire democratic public to take action against Jülide Yazıcı’s arrest and the threat of her extradition to Turkey; to strengthen solidarity and to build a strong public outcry.
