An Phoblacht Abú reports on the violence unleashed by the Free State Police forces against Irish republican activists during a protest on Friday, April 4th. Republican activists protested in front of the Belgian Embassy in Dublin, NATO’s Headquarters in Ireland. According to Anti-Imperialist Action (AIA) Ireland the protest was attended also by other anti-imperialist forces.

This protest was carried out as a part of the campaign against Britain and NATO in Ireland, a campaign lead by AIA Ireland

The activists protested the “unwanted presence of NATO in Ireland, highlight NATO’s central role in the ongoing British Occupation of Ireland and the US Military Occupation of Shannon Airport and to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian People and Resistance, demonstrating how the fight against NATO links the national liberation struggles in Ireland and Palestine.

The police forces were sent to repress this protest and broke the ankle of a Socialist Republican activist while brutally arresting him. He was arrested along with other seven activists. The repressive forces also extensively used pepper spray at close range, against their own rules, to attack the eyes. One republican woman was sexually assaulted with a “thug in uniform purposely grabbing her breast.

While the activists were arrested, a solidarity protest took place in front of the police station. AIA Ireland states that “That dignified protest was confronted by a violent attack by the Free State Police, which has resulted in serious injury, in order to intimidate and attempt to prevent future protests. Such tactics will never work against Republicans and we remain defiant.
