Court extends custody of Maoist leader, aide till May 21
PUNE: Senior leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit, Murali Kannambally, and his aide C P Ismail will remain in custody of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Pune till May 21. A sessions court here on Friday extended their police custody remand by six days, primarily to facilitate the ongoing investigations by the ATS into the network and activities of the arrested duo under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other penal provisions. Kannambally and Ismail were arrested by the ATS on May 8 from Talegaon Dabhade, around 33km from here. On May 9, the court of additional sessions judge S V Mane had ordered their remand in ATS custody for seven days. In-charge of additional sessions court judge D M Deshmukh observed in his order,

“Considering the nature and gravity of offence, more particularly, prima facie it appears that the accused are office bearers of the Communist Party (Maoist) i.e. Naxalite group banned by the Government of India. It appears from remand report that accused no 1 (Kannambally) is posing himself by different names. His activities are serious ones.” The court further observed, “Prima facie, it appears that accused are involved in anti-national activities. Considering the area, more particularly, various states in which the said organization (CPI-Maoist) is working, it is necessary to remand the accused to police custody because if sufficient police custody is not granted, it will be difficult for the investigating officer to bust the network of the accused and their organization. Accused are remanded to police custody till May 21.”
