Ten Maoists eliminated including major Central Committee Leader Balakrishna in Gariyaband by Security Forces

 



Ten Maoists, including Manoj alias Modem Balakrishna, a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), were killed by security forces during an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Gariyaband district on Thursday (September 11, 2025).

Confirming Manoj’s death, Gariyaband Superintendent of Police Nikhil Rakhecha said an anti-Maoist operation was launched and till 7.20 p.m. on Thursday (September 11, 2025), 10 bodies were recovered and search operations were under way.

The security personnel from the Special Task Force (STF, a unit of the State police), E-30 (a unit of the Gariyaband Police) and CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, an elite unit of the Central Reserve Police Force) conducted the operation.

Since the start of the year, six Central Committee members have been killed by the security forces in separate operations in Chhattisgarh (four), Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh (one each).

The list includes Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavaraju, the former general secretary of the CPI (Maoist), who was shot dead security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur in May. Another committee member Chalpathi alias Jairam was gunned down in Gariyaband, an insurgency affected area in Chhattisgarh outside the Naxal citadel of Bastar, in January.

With the latest operation, at least 241 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh so far in 2025. Of them, 212, including Basavaraju, were killed in the Bastar division while 27 others were gunned down in Gariyaband district.

Balakrishna belonged to Madikonda in Warangal district. Once upon a time lived in sultanpura in chadarghat hyderabad. Before joining Malakpet Junior College, Hyderabad, he studied SSC in English Medium at Government High School, Sultan Bazar, Hyderabad. Studied an intermediate vocational education course there between 1981 and 1983. During this period, he was influenced by the ideologies of Sambamurthy and Santosh Reddy of Radical Students Union (RSU). that drew him into the Maoist movement.

In 1983, he went to Bhadrachalam forests to function as a full-time cadre. In the journey of his militant career, he suffered multiple arrests and prison sentences. In 1984, he was arrested at Bhadrachalam bus stand and remained in Warangal Central Jail till the end of 1986. After his release, he shifted to Hyderabad but was again arrested in Mahaboob Nagar in 1987, resulting in being in Mushirabad jail till January 1990. After TDP MLA Venkateswara Rao's kidnap, he was released in prisoner exchange.

Later, he resumed Maoist activities in Hyderabad city. Balakrishna was appointed as Secretary of Mahaboobnagar District Committee in 1991, with the formation of Nalgonda and Mahaboob Nagar District Committee in April 1991. By May 1991, he had been promoted as a member of the regional committee of the South Telangana Regional Committee. In 1993 March, he was arrested in Kurnool district and kept in Chanchalguda Central Jail. He was granted conditional bail on August 18, 1999. And then he went back into the unknown. After the bail, Balakrishna rose further in the Maoist party. He has been appointed as Secretary Odisha State Organizing Committee (SOC) and currently CPI (Maoist) is guiding Western Bureau under Odisha State Committee.

Balakrishna played an instrumental role in formulating the The Special Features of the Indian Revolution and Marxist Approach towards Revolutionary Movement presented by the Central Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninism Mao Tse Tung Thought and Revolutionary Movements) on 9-12 March 1995 on the topic ‘Marxism Leninist) (People's War) presented by the Central organizing committee of the Communist party of India (People’s War) solution Reminds me of the document of Those Problems. The document was submitted on behalf of Patel Sudhakar Reddy, Shakamuri Apparao, Modem Balakrishna, who were in jail. All three of them also sent a personal message to the conference.

He also filed ia case in Andhra Pradesh High Court challenging the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) against them. Justice MN Rao garu while giving the verdict on 1995 July 1, "While the government thinks that naxalites are a problem, people think that they are the solution to their problems. To resolve this matter, discussions should take place between the government and the Naxalites" wrote in his verdict. From that verdict itself, the thoughts of discussions have started.
