Police foiled an attempt by prisoners to take control of the divisional jail in Sitamarhi, Bihar late on Saturday night. Sitamarhi superintendent of police (SP) Nawal Kishore Singh said police had to open fire to quell the mob of angry prisoners who were resisting the move to shift hardcore Maoists, Santosh Jha and Samrat Choudhary, currently lodged there, to Buxar and Gaya, respectively. The Maoist inmates were being shifted on the orders of inspector general (prisons), Singh said.
At least four prisoners were injured in the firing, he said. The prisoners also indulged in heavy stone pelting and broke the windowpanes of SP’s vehicle. Two jawans sustained injuries in the brickbatting, the SP added. Police fired about 50 rounds to bring the situation under control even as Sashastra Seema Bal and CRPF personnel were rushed to assist the district police.
