RANCHI: A CRPF jawan has sustained bullet injury in a fierce encounter between the police and the CPI (Maoists) in Saraikela district Jharkhand on Saturday. The condition of the jawan, who was evacuated from the spot and brought to Ranchi Medical hospital in a helicopter, was stated to be stable.
CRPF IG Sanjay Lathekar said the encounter that started on the Saraikela Khunti border is still going on. “We had specific input about an important meeting of the Maoists going on in the forests of West Singhbhum and Saraikela region following which massive combing operation was launched,” he said.
The encounter that started on Saturday night was still going on with heavy firing from both sides. IG, operations, and state police spokesperson Ashish Batra said that the meeting of CPI Maoists was being attended by senior leaders of the banned outfit. “We have information about a central committee member and cadres from West Bengal and Jharkhand attending the meet,” he added.
At a time when the encounter still continued police had little information about the onground success about elimination or arrest of the Maoists.
