May 8 – The Day Fascism Was Defeated! -ATIK

May 8 – The Day Fascism Was Defeated!

May 8 symbolizes liberation from German fascism and the end of the Second Imperialist World War in Europe. This date is not only a day of remembrance and gratitude, but also an important moment that reminds us of our historical responsibility.

80 years ago, Nazi Germany was defeated. Millions of people—Jews, communists, Sinti and Roma, political dissidents, trade unionists, homosexuals, and many others—were subjected to systematic persecution, stripped of their basic rights, and murdered. This liberation was achieved through the leading role of the Soviet Union’s Red Army and the collective struggle of resistance movements. This victory was the result of a united fight against one of the darkest periods in human history.

Fascism and war have not remained in the past

Fascism continues to exist today in different forms. Racism, nationalism, authoritarian tendencies, and fascist organizations are gaining strength again. Therefore, the phrase “Never again” is not only a reminder of the past, but a call to responsibility for the present and the future.

As wars and imperialist contradictions deepen across the world—especially in the Middle East—the war economy is expanding, and arms companies are increasing their profits. While regions are destabilized, it is the people who pay the price for these policies.

In Europe, as more resources are allocated to militarization, rents and living costs are rising; restrictions in education, healthcare, pensions, and social security are being introduced. This burden is placed particularly on workers, youth, women, and the broader laboring population. As militarism and social inequality grow together, poverty among the masses also increases.

Peace cannot be achieved through militarization. Today’s imperialist aggression is a result of competition for power and interests driven by capitalist crises. Understanding wars requires looking not only at what happens on the battlefield, but also at the economic and political dynamics behind these conflicts.

For this reason, antifascism is not only a struggle against neo-Nazi structures; it is also a comprehensive struggle against the conditions that produce fascism and war. Standing against nationalism, racism, fascism, militarism, and systems of exploitation is an inseparable part of this struggle. At the same time, opposing the current attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, Israel’s actions in Palestine described as genocide, and attacks on Yemen and Lebanon—and supporting the struggles of peoples—are also part of this effort.

We reiterate our demand for May 8 to be declared an official public holiday in Europe. This is not merely a symbolic step, but an important move toward assuming historical responsibility and strengthening active antifascist awareness.

The liberation of 1945 was not a gift; it was won through the struggle of resistance fighters, partisans, and survivors. This legacy is a responsibility for all of us today.

Organize against fascism!

Long live international solidarity!
