Since last couple of months after the
announcement of a new constitution, Nepal is facing a serious crisis
due to the undeclared economic blockade imposed by India. The Indian
government has denied any such sanction rather it blames this on
Madhesi protestors of terai region who have hindered the entry points
on Indo-Nepal border and blocked all supplies. There is no doubt that
Madhesi people are dissatisfied with the new constitution and hence
they are protesting against it since last three months. They feel
that it has failed to address their demands and an injustice has been
done to the community. But the Indian Government, that was already
unhappy with the Nepali leadership has now played up on this rage and
has tried to teach a lesson by first imposing the blockade directly
and then indirectly on the pretext of Madhesi sentiment.
This impasse has created an
unprecedented crisis for the Nepali people. People from plains and
hilly areas both are affected from this. There is serious dearth of
petrol, cooking gas, medicines in Nepal and the ordinary life is in
shackles. People feel as if they are citizens of a war-ridden nation.
The contradictions between both the countries as well as that of hill
and terai are getting sharper day by day. This contradiction is
making inroads into the common masses too.
This is a grave situation. In
solidarity with the people of Nepal including the agitating people of
Tarai-Madhesh, we hope to resolve this situation through dialogue as
soon as possible. The government of India must not treat this crisis
as a prestige issue rather it should immediately call for an end to
this ‘unofficial blockade’.
To deliberate upon the situation we
have called a meeting with some of our Nepalese comrades. We expect
your presence and participation.
