The 40-Day War: Iran’s Strategic Victory, Defeat of US Power, Dawn of a New West Asia and Multi-Polar World

TEHRAN — As the sun rose over Tehran this morning, the city was not met with the roar of jets, but with the thunderous cheers of millions. After forty days of high-intensity conflict that pushed the world to the precipice of a global conflagration, Iran has declared a definitive strategic victory following the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire and the commencement of negotiations in Islamabad on 10 April.[1] The Israel-US War on Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, has concluded its first phase with a profound shift in the regional balance of power, leaving the “maximum pressure” doctrine of the Trump & Netanyahu regimes in ruins.

The People’s Defence and President Pezheshkian’s Resolve

The cornerstone of this victory was the mush discussed Iranian “Asymmetric Warfare”, the highly advanced and lethal Missiles and Drone systems and the unprecedented mobilization of the Iranian populace.

An estimated 14 million volunteers—the Basij and civilian sectors alike—deployed to form human and logistical shields around critical infrastructure.[2] From the Bushehr nuclear facility to the industrial bridges of Khuzestan and the power grids of Israeli-targeted hubs, the message was clear: the Iranian civilization would not be “wiped out,” as President Donald Trump had threatened in a late-night ultimatum.[3]

President Masoud Pezheshkian, who remained in the capital throughout the heaviest bombardments, addressed the nation from Enqelab Square. “The era of bowing to the threats of bullies has ended,” Pezheshkian declared. “Our people have shown that the spirit of Sumud (steadfastness) is stronger than any bunker-buster. We have defended our sovereignty, and now we will dictate the terms of the peace.”[4]

The Islamabad Mandate: The 11 Conditions for a New Regional Order

According to Iranian state media and diplomatic sources in Islamabad, the framework for the current ceasefire is built upon a proposal that the United States has reportedly accepted as the basis for formal negotiations.[5] These conditions represent a total recalibration of the legal and military status quo in West Asia:

  1. Non-aggression Pact: A binding agreement between the US and Iran to ensure a permanent end to kinetic hostilities.
  2. Sovereign Control of Hormuz: Recognition of Iran’s continued and exclusive oversight of the Strait of Hormuz, linking the 10-day ceasefire directly to the reopening of the waterway.[6]
  3. Nuclear Enrichment Rights: The explicit recognition of Iran’s right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
  4. Lifting of Primary Sanctions: The total removal of all primary US sanctions targeting the Iranian economy.
  5. Lifting of Secondary Sanctions: The removal of sanctions affecting third-party countries, restoring Iran’s global trade rights.
  6. UN Security Council Resolution Exit: The termination of all outstanding UNSC resolutions used to isolate Tehran.
  7. IAEA Board Resolution Closure: The cessation of all International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board resolutions against Iran’s program.
  8. Reparations for Damages: Payment of financial compensation to Iran for the immense physical and economic damages sustained during the conflict.[7]
  9. Withdrawal of US Combat Forces: The scheduled exit of US combat troops from the region.
  10. Global Cessation of Hostilities: A total ceasefire across all active fronts, including conflicts involving Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon.[8]
  11. Hormuz-Linked Ceasefire: The official recognition that the ceasefire is mechanically tied to the functional reopening of the Strait.

I would add that this discussion will also include the issue of Palestine, occupied and colonised by apartheid genocidal Judeo-Nazi Israel. The situation in Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank is indeed dire. Any long-term solution to the region will have to include a comprehensive solution of the Palestinian issue, as that is at the very core of the geopolitical crisis.

Hormuz: The New Economic Pivot

Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi emphasized that while safe passage is temporarily restored, the “rules of the game” have changed. “For too long, the Strait of Hormuz was treated as a free-for-all for those who sought to starve our people,” Aragchi stated. “Henceforth, the Strait is a matter of sovereign Iranian oversight.”[9]

The centrepiece of this new policy is the “Hormuz Transit Toll.” According to documents approved by the Iranian Parliament’s Security Commission, Tehran intends to levy a tax of $1 per barrel on all oil transiting the Strait. With roughly 20 million barrels per day passing through the chokepoint, estimates suggest a revenue stream of nearly $90 billion annually. This “sovereign dividend” is earmarked for the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged during the war.

The Collapse of the Petrodollar and the Rise of Petroyuan

In a direct challenge to the US financial system, Iran has announced it will accept transit fees and oil payments in Petroyuan and other non-Western currencies.[10] This move, supported by the BRICS+ framework, marks a decisive acceleration in global de-dollarization. As the nuclear issue moves to the periphery, the focus is the end of banking and energy sanctions—a demand the US appears increasingly likely to concede.

Trump’s Domestic Crisis and the Fractured West

While Tehran celebrates, Washington is in the throes of a constitutional crisis. President Trump’s decision to wage a “war of choice” without Congressional approval has backfired. Representative Ro Khanna has led the charge for impeachment, calling the war a “reckless violation of the War Powers Act that has only served to isolate America.”[11]

The dissent has reached the highest levels of the US military and media. Tucker Carlson, in a monologue that garnered over 100 million views, described the conflict as “Israel’s war fought with American blood,” while Candace Owens argued that the US had been “goaded into a civilization-ending conflict for the sake of Netanyahu’s political survival.”[12] Megyn Kelly also questioned the strategic rationale after the US military failed to achieve its stated goal of regime change.

Across the Atlantic, the EU-NATO alliance is in tatters. Spain and France have publicly rejected the US-Israeli strikes, effectively ending the era of a unified “Western” front in West Asia.

A New Regional Architecture

The war has acted as a catalyst for a new regional security architecture. The GCC is effectively fractured; while the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are viewed as “exposed,” Qatar and Oman have emerged as the primary mediators, aligned with the principle of “regional solutions for regional problems.”

The Axis of Resistance—Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Iraqi Resistance—has emerged with bolstered legitimacy. Ansarullah in Yemen remains a potent wildcard, having held the “Bab-el-Mandab card” in reserve as a deterrent.[13] Iran has transitioned to a “Eurasian Superpower,” alongside China and Russia, serving as the bridge for the integration of the Silk Road and North-South corridors.
