Bhattarai's 'democratic' Defence Minister asks India to resume military supplies including counter-insurgency helicopters.

KATHMANDU, JAN 20 - Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar, who is currently on a visit to India, has requested the Indian government to resume arms and weapons supplies that that was suspended after the then King Gyanendra Shah took over the reins of government in February 2005.

According to the Indian daily, Hindustan Times, Gachhadar had submitted a lit of military hardware including the Lancer counter-insurgency helicopter to Indian Defence Minister AK Antony on Thursday.
Gachhadar’s equipment list includes mine-protected vehicle, 81 mm mortar, 5.56 mm INSAS rifle, and 7.62 mm rifle. The Indian government had halted the military support after the then King Gyanendra captured power during the insurgency.
The Indian government had provided with some armaments but not in a full-fledged manner. Since the beginning of the peace process, Nepal has been requesting the Indian government to reinstate the military aids and trainings.
Hindustan Times further stated that Gachhadar had said that the Nepali government wants to reopen the Sundarijal arsenal. Furthermore, Gachhadar had requested the Indian government to help repair the grounded helicopters, wrote Hindustan Times.
