Wake Up Keralam: A New Movement Rises to Resist Fascism and Defend Democratic Values

We are witnessing recent attempts by extreme right-wing political ideology to take root in Kerala through various schemes, thereby overturning all the renaissance traditions of Kerala. The proponents of neo-Brahminical ideology are trying to destroy the history of coexistence and equality that many renaissance leaders—including Narayana Guru, Ayyankali, Poykayil Appachan, Vakkom Maulavi, Pandit Karuppan, Kochukali, and Halima Bivi—achieved by fighting against caste discrimination and social backwardness in Kerala. The RSS-led Sangh Parivar fascism, which is controlling the administration, is carrying out its efforts to subvert these renaissance traditions with great intensity and with the blessings of the state. They are constantly making interventions to destroy the secular-pluralistic values dreamed of by the architects of India’s Constitution and to divide people in the name of caste and religion.
This is an occasion for the people of Kerala to be politically vigilant against the extreme right-wing ideology that is sowing the seeds of religious and caste division in the soil of Kerala, which has long lived in harmony and coexistence. The ‘Wake Up Keralam’ or ‘Unaroo Keralame’ group is a movement formed at the initiative of individuals and small democratic groups working in various cultural, political, and ecological sectors in Kerala, with the aim of leading Kerala society towards this political realization and organizing resistance.

The WakeUp Keralam (Unaroo Keralame) group was formed as part of the national-level cultural movement called the ‘All India People’s Movement’, which met in Bangalore in the second week of February 2026, with the participation of various popular movements and individuals in the country. It was formed with the aim of putting up a strong resistance against the new political fascism in India by coordinating the art, cultural and environmental groups that were working in isolation in Kerala. The policy of this group will be to agree with democratic political movements only on this ideological level, to firmly oppose the Sangh Parivar agendas that take the vile path of sectarianism and hatred, and to criticize political parties that seem to be giving in to them for party political interests.
The movement considers the following issues to be those that need urgent attention in Kerala:
-The SIR process in Kerala is in its final stages. Neither the ruling party nor the opposition has effectively intervened in Kerala at its initial stages to prevent this anti-people process from being implemented in the state. Using their cadres at various stages, they have allowed a section of the people to be rendered unable to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections, thereby putting their citizenship itself in question. At least in this final stage, this movement will observe whether they are awake and working, conduct pilot studies, move legally where necessary, and stand firmly on the side of the people.
-Create widespread awareness about the dangers of cultural fascism
affecting the Dalit-Tribal backward classes, minorities, and all
sections of the common people of Indian society.
Make the youth aware
of how fatal a blow the BJP’s economic policies are to their future and
instill in them the need to unite for an India that is free from caste
discrimination, committed to secularism, and founded on justice.
- Organize activities to convince the public of the great responsibility involved in protecting the Constitution.
- Conduct campaigns in the upcoming assembly election constituencies and block the chances of communal fascist parties winning.
- Resist Sangh Parivar initiatives, such as the movie The Kerala Story, that are destroying the friendly and harmonious atmosphere of Kerala.
- Use social media effectively and honestly, including through fact-checking, and prevent the spread of false propaganda.
- Act as a pressure force in ensuring 33% women representation and representation for trans persons when anti-fascist political parties decide on their candidate lists.
- Spread the message that all wars are inhumane and serve only the interests of the rulers.
Wake Up Kerala has decided to organize continuous interventions in various parts of the state on the above-mentioned urgent issues.
