A dark wave of reaction is spreading across Europe. In France the fascist Front National is strong and in Italy nationalist and fascist political groups have been gaining in support. In Germany the far right Alternative for Germany have a large representation in the national parliament and in Poland and Hungary nationalist governments are undermining civil liberties. The common factor here is racism stirred up against refugees from turmoil in Africa and the Middle East. Leftist political forces – social democrats and communists – in these countries are very weak and have not provided effective leadership for the people to fight back against the nationalists and fascists. At the same time millions of ordinary people have resisted the racist agitators and welcomed the refugees in their midst, especially in Germany and Italy.
The European Union is an emerging capitalist superstate and does not represent the interests of the great mass of the people. Its incompetent handling of the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008 shows that it is on the side of the monopoly capitalists. The people of Greece and Portugal have particularly suffered from EU economic policies. Also the EU is an imperialist state as shown by its involvement along with the Western imperialists in trying to incorporate Georgia and the Ukraine into the EU and NATO.

Racism
In Britain the UKIP racists and Tory Brexit nationalists led by Jacob Rees-Mogg have been trying to deflect us from the real problems we face by stirring up hatred against migrant workers. We must recognise that the working class are an international class with interests in common. Wherever we originate from we should stand shoulder to shoulder to resist the oppression and exploitation we face from the capitalist ruling class and the mainstream politicians – Tory, Labour and Liberal Democrat – who serve them.
Living standards
Ever since the financial crisis of 2008 working people in Britain have been suffering from falling real incomes. Most of the trade unions, especially the large ones such as UNISON, UNITE and GMB, have shown themselves to be on the whole useless at leading worker resistance. These organisations are businesses run for the benefit of their highly paid full-time officials at the cost of their ordinary members. Some of the most exploited workers, many of them migrants, have been setting up their own new unions and winning significant improvements in their pay and conditions, especially in London. Wherever there is oppression, there is resistance!
Housing
Ever since industrial capitalism began in Britain 250 years ago it has been incapable of providing adequate housing for the people. Now people are finding it increasingly difficult to pay rents and mortgage repayments and homelessness and rough sleeping are on the rise. Perhaps most disgusting are Labour borough councils in London selling off council housing estates to private property companies who will redevelop the sites for rent and purchase by higher income groups. We must fight back by means of occupations and other forms of direct action.
What is the way forward?
Some people think that the election of a Labour Government led by Jeremy Corbyn can begin to tackle these massive problems faced by working people. But is this very likely? For a start, the great majority of Labour MPs and councillors are reactionaries doing all they can to discredit and undermine Corbyn and his associates. Also there is a shadowy, well-financed group waiting in the wings to form a new “centrist” political party to if necessary split the Labour vote in the next general election. This wrecking tactic was used in the 1983 General Election when some of the Labour leaders formed the Social Democratic Party. Even if a Labour Government with a working majority were to be elected then any attempts to enact radical policies would be undermined by the capitalist -controlled media, the monopoly capitalist financiers in the City of London, the Civil Service, the courts and the military commanders. We’ve seen it all before!
Long experience in Britain and other countries shows that capitalism cannot be gotten rid of by reforms. It can only be overthrown by mass revolutionary action. This is what we must prepare for and not be deluded by Trotskyites and others into thinking that the Labour Party can build socialism.
