54 detained in anti-World Cup protest in Brazil
SAO PAULO — Police say that 54 people protesting against the World
Cup have been arrested in Brazil’s largest city. The police department
says on its Twitter page that they were taken into custody during
Tuesday night’s demonstration in Sao Paulo, which will host of the first
game of the World Cup on June 12. Police said Wednesday that at least
1,500 people participated in the protest, which saw the windows of three
banks smashed and one subway station damaged.
