Manipur - Boykott visit President Pranab Mukherjee

Manipur police has sounded alert to the bombs squads and security personnel detailed in and around the Manipur University campus where President Pranab Mukherjee is scheduled to attend a convocation ceremony after a tip-off suggested militants planning to explode powerful bombs. A highly place official source said that state police department had received information from an intelligence agency that the Maoist Communist Party Manipur (MCPM) was planning to explode IEDs at least at two places within in or around the campus of the Manipur University, Canchipur. Pranab who will be arriving at Imphal Tuesday for a brief one-day visit in the state.
Following the input, state police have directed all the security personnel who have already been detailed in and around the university campus to remain alert and to have a close vigilant. Personnel of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad have also conducted a thorough search operation at suspected places on Monday. The same operation is likely to carry out again Tuesday before the President arrives, the source disclosed.
The President is scheduled to travel by road upto the university, which is around 8 kilometer from Imphal Raj Bhavan. Police source said that the security measures have been tightened considering the boycott called by the underground organizations and possibility of exploding bomb ahead or during the visit of the President. Door to door verification was also conducted at Nngombam and its surrounding localities located at the proximity of the airport where the President’s flight is scheduled to land. Meanwhile, at least 34 persons including 7 former members of underground outfit were picked up for verification by a team of Imphal West Police on Monday.
To boycott the visit, besides the Coordination Committee (CorCom) of six major separatist groups, the Maoist Communist Party Manipur and anti-talk group of United Revolutionary Front, front formed by various factions of KCP have called for general strikes separately in the state. The general strikes would commence from 5 am of Tuesday till 5 pm.
