CPN-Maoist calls CC amid differences
KATHMANDU, DEC 08 – A CPN-Maoist Central Committee meeting, scheduled
to begin on Sunday, is likely to see contention between two factions
over whether to continue with the street protest or accept an offer to
join the Constituent Assembly (CA). According to Secretary Dev Gurung,
the first CC meeting after the party decided to boycott the CA polls,
will appraise the party’s past strategy and formulate its future
political course. The meeting is likely to be dominated by calls for
street agitation or joining the assembly since the leadership has
floated differing views.
Some leaders including Vice-chairman CP Gajurel want to join the CA
seeking ‘dignified’ position and an all-party conference, while others
such as Secretary Netra Bikram Chand insist on continuity of the
struggle. Many party leaders doubt the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML
are serious about incorporating them into the CA and protecting the past
achievements. A leader close to Chand said the party may be open to
joining the CA depending on the treatment of the major parties and the
strategy of disgruntled parties.
