Suspected Maoist leaders shifted to prison in Hyderabad
Suspected Maoist leaders Jaspal Singh and Akhilesh Jadav have been
shifted to the central prison at Charlapalli in Hyderabad from
Karimnagar District Jail, Karimnagar Jailor N Shiva Kumar said here
today. Based on a representation by the Karimnagar District Jail to
shift the duo since there is no special cell for Maoists in Karimnagar
District Jail, Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate Azahar Hussain
had directed that they be shifted to Charlapalli Central Prison in
Hyderabad, where separate barracks exist to house Naxal leaders. Jaspal
Singh and Akhilesh Jadav were shifted to Charlapalli Central Prison
accordingly. The two undertrial prisoners are allegedly involved in the
murder of former Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Duddilla Sripada Rao in
2009, in which, top Maoist leader Muppala Laxmana Rao (Ganapathi) and
others have also been named as accused. Based on a confessional
statement given by one of the accused — Malla Raji Reddy — on January 1,
2008, the Karimnagar Rural Police had registered a case of murder
against Ganapathi and 33 others.
They include Kobad Gandhy, Varanasi Subrahmanyam, Janthu Mukherjee,
Amit Bagchi, Pramod Mishra, Jaspal Singh and Akhilesh Jadav who are
detained in various prisons. Ganapathi, Akkiraju Haragopal, Cherukuri
Raj Kumar and several others have also been arrested. Malla Raji Reddy
got bail and has been absconding since then. However, the police have
not file any charge sheet so far. Meanwhile, Communist Party of India
(Maoist) Central Committee members Janthu Mukherjee, Amit Bagchi and
Pramod Mishra were produced before a local court on Wednesday. Jaspal
Singh and Akhilesh Jadav were not produced before court.
